WINTER

Most winter tasks take place between September and April.

Some tasks take place year-round; you'll find those listed on the summer page as well.

SNOW CLEARANCE & SALT SPREADING

At present, we operate this service within Lerwick only.

We salt and clear paths, steps and car-parks. You’ll be given peace of mind that your staff, visitors, customers and deliveries will be able to approach your front door without undue risk.

Weather forecasts and ground temperatures are checked at least twice daily. If snow or frost is forecast, we will come out to clear surfaces and spread salt in the wee-small hours, before your staff arrive.

All our procedures are HSE compliant, and our staff are suitably trained & equipped, inc PPE. We arrive onsite with everything we need, so no need for onsite storage of equipment or salt. We will risk assess your site. We have full insurance cover for this kind of work, and staff available 24-hours.

When the snow comes, we will be very busy, so it is best if you make arrangements with us beforehand for salt-spreading and snow-clearing work.

ROTOVATING

We turn over vegetable plots during the winter months, using our heavy-duty pedestrian rotovator (the rotovator also often comes in useful when we’re building lawns). We can fit our rotovator through a narrow gate, but it is powerful and fast, offering you an economical means of digging over ground.

HEDGE-PRUNING (winter)

Winter is the time to prune or renovate an overgrown deciduous shrub. Evergreens are generally best pruned in the early part of the year, after flowering, and before new spring growth gets underway. Hedge-trimming is also a summer activity.

We use powerful petrol hedgetrimmers. With both handheld and long-reach-pole models, we offer an efficient and cost-effective means of keeping your hedges neat and tidy.

We will tailor timing and frequency of cut according to your type of shrub, and to suit your requirements.

WEEDING, GARDENING, LITTER-PICKING, SOFT & HARD LANDSCAPING

We can undertake regular maintenance, tackle long-neglected jungles, build walls, pavements, create new beds and borders, etc.

For some specialist gardening work, we will sub-contract to tree-surgeons or garden-designers as required, to meet your needs.

MOSS, LICHEN & ALGAE CONTROL

We can help you to control moss, lichen & algae on hard surfaces, and within turf areas. Ideally, we prefer to use a combination of preventative and curative approaches.

We use both mechanical and chemical means of control. Chemically-treated areas are safe for pets and children. We do recommend, however, that efforts are made to keep them off the treated area for an hour or so, immediately following application.

LAWN RENOVATION

Sometimes it takes a little more than simply mowing the lawn regularly to keep it in good condition.

If you’re not happy with the general condition of your lawn, we’ll be pleased to do what we can to help improve its health and appearance. As may be required, we can reduce infiltration of weeds & moss, improve drainage & aeration, flatten out bumps, cut back the edge where it meets borders, and so forth.
